Final Fantasy XIII Official UK Launch

Mark Boss hits the Oxford Street HMV for the launch of one of the biggest games of the year.
On his own and midly ill he tours the queue armed with only a Microphone (named Susan) and his camcorder.
This actually turned out to be one of my favourite event coverages so far, and a great start to the year.
HUGE thanks to all those in the queue that doubled as my camera person. That includes you Pete!
Uber cool points for my Tecmo Koei family Chin and Julia for actually getting me the collectors edition of the game whilst I was in the queue to get it signed!
And also a huge ‘I want to adopt Becky and David’, you guys are just awesome.

Gaming – Technology In Play

Back in the late 90’s, the gaming industry was taking a significant turn in its definition and scale of game play. With 3D gaming technology being fully employed into games such as Super Mario 64 (1997), the strong cinematic narrative seen in Metal Gear Solid (1999) and the scope of Final Fantasy 7 (1997), the gaming industry had stepped up its game. Literally.

fantasy 7

The advertising tag for this was 'is your tv big enough', a great comment on how games were changing beyond the TV's they've always been played on.

At the time it could have been seen as a sign of things to come, however the immediate after-flow of games seemed only to work on what these games have done rather than completely redefine its genre such as Super Mario 64 did with the platform genre. To look back it is apparent that it is the leap in 3D graphics at the time meaning that it would actually take another huge technological leap to re-invent the games/genres we play today. Gaming technology has always driven the possibility and differences of new gaming genres and this is what I wish to explore on this article.

Likewise with both Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy 7, there was a huge leap on what these games could accomplish to their predecessors. It was the jump to CD ROM that allowed the scope of FF7 possible and the Hollywood combination of visuals and sound in MGS.

The same effect of new technology into great games can be seen also in the late 80’s where gaming had changed due to the first successful home consoles such as the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System), offering something different to that of their arcade parents. Primarily the first video games ever created were basic reflex and aiming endeavours. And as technology has evolved so have the game mechanics and genres to it, as well as the audience. Only kids could have been marketed with a game like Super Mario Bros (1987) on the NES, with its cartooned visuals, which were all that was capable at the time. But as time went by, more was possible through advancing graphics technology; therefore more was possible contextually allowing for a possible older age range in gaming. The very definition of what gaming is in its time seems to reside on the technology of its time.

power glove

A glimpse into the future for Nintendo perhaps?

There is always the matter of game play over visuals, but ultimately Video games is technology and it is with new technology that we can expect the most likely groundbreaking games and new genres.

It has always been these games at the spear point of change that are often herald as the best games of all time or given that elusive 10/10 score which so many sites/ magazines hold for the best of the best. And rightly so, these games have more than the advantage of being state of the art, their usually ground breaking in content, opening up the possibilities for the ever expanding world of video games entertainment.

And now it seems we’re once again in the front line of gaming evolution. With the success of Nintendo’s Wii motion control, the physical practice of gaming has changed from its long running gamepad peripherals. The ease of use with it has also enabled the industry to expand into different age groups. Blu-ray game discs and DVD allow games to reach new heights in visual scope and scale. Gaming Graphics are getting closer to the CGI found in films allowing performance to be an attribute, such as that found in Heavenly Sword. Online multiplayer has reached a new mainstream audience with the successful online networks on consoles such as Xbox live. These are small advances compared to the jump from arcade to console, or 2D to 3D, but important ones that mould the current gaming generation into a more ’serious’ one. After all it was not too long ago when games consoles had names such as Mega Drive or Game Boy, names aimed for the toy market in comparison with the now family/adult targeted names of (DS) Duel Screen or Wii.

So what does the rest of the future hold for us? With Project Natal and 3D gaming on the horizon, we can be sure of some exciting developments in ‘what we play’, rather than the obvious ‘how we play’. Well, so long as it’s nothing like the Virtual Boy.

I personally, like to think the greatest turning point in gaming would be the implementation of full virtual reality or a Star Trek style ‘holodeck’ room in gaming. This could put gaming into a full mainstream phenomenon, even more so then it is now. And as for the first few games that are released on it, those will most likely change the ever debatable definition of video games.

My WoW Date!

‘NOT A REAL DATE’ DISCLAIMER

This was not a real date as such. We just both play the game and thought we could meet up in there to play on the same realm. The ‘date’ part was really a joke between us. And I know what she looks like in real life. She is not a fat dude with an impressive array of handguns as suggested by the gamers over on my ‘GiantBomb.com’ blog. Which I’ll admit was quite funny.

However, she is in fact a hot girl. Yes that’s right, hot girls do actually play games. Not all of them, just the ones with a good taste in hobbies.

And lastly, me and said girl are in fact dating in real life, that’s probably the most important part of the disclaimer.

The Date

Meeting with someone on WoW is always tricky. Simply because everyone I know seems to be on different realms. After some discussion I and the princess had decided to meet on her realm. Mainly to do with the fact that she was a higher level than the character on my realm.

I was pretty cool with this, but being a somewhat old fashioned ‘manly man’, I did feel a bit castrated by her level 80 character :p

I totally had the situation under control :/

And yes, I am the light red one. NOT PINK…light red. I was going for the Hellboy look.

So after meeting up in Darnassus (the night elf spawn point), I decided to head off to the Human capital city under the impression that there might be something cool to do there.

On the way there my date had turned into a wolf...

On the way there my date had turned into a wolf...

...and then night elf mohawked me :(

At this point of the date I had realised two things. One- Mr T’s hair is making a comeback in modern day pop culture. And 2- this isn’t how I had planned the date in my mind.

So there I was a light red night elf with a Mohawk and my date had turned into a wolf. At this point though I started to worry. I’ve got no idea where in the city I was going to take her! Once again she took the lead, and said for me to follow her…

Eventually we arrived at Goldshire.

I had been at Goldshire before but never realised that it’s the same place they used in the South Park episode (Make Love, Not Warcraft, 2006). After goofing around with some of the locals and re-enacting scenes from that episode. We headed into a local inn and kicked back for a bit. Hey it’s better than just talking on MSN.

Unfortunately at this point I had to disconnect as my laptop screen was about to get fixed by a planned in house engineer appointment. I had warned the princess about this pre game, and she was pretty cool about it.

Thanks to a speedy fix I was back in Azeroth in about 15 minutes! At this point however though my date had left Goldshire and gone on a quest somewhere up north. I had decided to use my Hearthstone and teleport back to Darnassus for a hopeful pick up by the princess.

But then disaster struck! Waiting for me at the teleport point was a band of Horde looking mighty vicious. Three of them, one of which appeared to be the leader were seated on a crazed rhino. Me forgetting that I was on a ‘normal’ realm walked up to the toughest looking one, and being quite cocky; struck it with my staff. Within 1 minute I was a spirit looking down on my awesome Hellboy light red body.

So I realised there was only one thing I could do, I had to call the princess for help. I managed to resurrect my body when the Horde had their back turned whilst ganging up on some other poor Night Elf. I ran into a nearby house and immediately contacted her. She just said ’stay put I’ll be there’.

Me hiding out, I mean waiting for the princess to arrive. I wasnt really hiding...

Me hiding out, I mean waiting for the princess to arrive. I wasnt really hiding...

Within 5 minutes, she writes ‘ok, all gone’. I’m thinking ‘hmm maybe she’s joking’. I slowly peer out through the doorway and scan the area. Peaceful. And there she was. Standing in front of me with her awesome axe weapon in hand. I think I’m in love.

We then had virtual sex. JUST KIDDING! We called it a night.

‘AFTER READING’ DISCLAIMER TO AVOID REPETITIVE COMMENTS

No, I don’t actually think I’m in love. Yes I realise that my Samurai/Hellboy character is sort of a pinkish colour. No, seriously she is not a fat dude with loads of handguns.

you call that a Chocobo? now THATS a Chocobo!

About a month or so ago, one of my friends sent me a message about a Square Enix promotion for final fantasy 13. It involved Signing up and then eventually getting a code which would enable me to download an exclusive Xbox avatar pet, namely the good ol lovely very cute, very awesome… CHOCOBO!

Last week I got the code for said Chocobo through my mail box, entered the code, and downloaded my avatar pet.

Visions of my avatar sitting upon an awesome Chocobo ran through my head…

‘Don’t B Nervous Talking 2 Girls’- yup I bought it and heres a video

Heres the video of me playing it, you probably want to watch that first to know what the hell I’m talking about.

For the past year independent gamers having been welding their ambitious programing/ developing ‘talent’ upon the gamers of Xbox Live with varying degrees of awesome. Theres the ones that really try for something original and fun like ‘Kudo game lab’. Theres the novelty cash in games like ‘pumpkin carver’ released during the Halloween season. And then theres the old school formula reworked with pretty pixels, such as ‘I made a game with zombies’.

This game falls into none of those categories. Its just crazy. But its also kinda practical and for an upcoming independent gaming studio quite the cash in. Because lets face it, we gamers have been known to not be the smoothest with the ladies, right? Plus we’ll almost always buy a game with a pretty girl on it. I’m not sure which of these facts is more depressing

I have to say however despite my initial speculations on the game, it works well as a ‘play it with your mates for a laugh’ game. You know like a guilty pleasure. Its pretty funny to see friends reaction when they got a cocky negative response from ‘Jessica’ the virtual hottie.

And from a single man who practically has no game, I do find that I am actually learning the basics of being smooth.

…And learning how tall the tallest rollercoaster is :/

MCM Expo 2009 Videos

I hit the MCM Expo this October and got us some great video coverage. Check it out!

I go through a playthrough of the Splinter Cell demo with a Ubisoft rep.

I do the rounds on the Bayonetta stand and ask my fellow games their impressions on the game.

I take a moment with Ben Walker from Sega to discuss their new title Bayonetta which earlier that week scored 40/40 in Famitsu magazine.

I take some time out from playing games to interview two professional cosplayers and ask them about one of the coolest if somewhat unspoken about jobs in the gaming industry. Watch all of it to witness them confess their love for me at the end ;)
